It is the twelfth and final month of the year and hosts the shortest day and longest night of the year. However, December was not always the 12th month. Before 153 BC, the Roman Calendar only had ten months. Hence “December” comes from the Latin word decem, meaning “ten”.

After a hectic year, we pause and reflect. 2022 marked our 20th birthday, the return of in-person trade shows, our first hosted community conference since the start of the pandemic, and many other events. 2022 was a significant year.

It seems not long ago when we were all still basking in patio weather, enjoying the warmth over a few drinks. So it’s bittersweet for many of us to pull out our favorite cardigans and coziest crewnecks as colder months approach.

But as legendary Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde once lamented, “conversation about the weather is the last refuge of the unimaginative". To that, we couldn’t agree more. Thankfully, we have a lot more to talk about than the weather in this month’s newsletter.

October was noteworthy for many reasons. Earlier in the month, we hosted the SmartSimple Unite EMEA Conference, our first in-person event in nearly three years! We also recognized Cyber Security Awareness Month, a time devoted to highlighting the importance of robust cybersecurity best practices.

As we look towards a busy November, there are several conferences we’ll be attending. Read on for the latest on all of these activities!

September has the distinction of having some of the most famous and most talented people in history born in the month. They include legendary rockers like Freddie Mercury, athletes like the recently retired G.O.A.T of women’s tennis Serena Williams, and famed crime author Agatha Christie.

This group also shares a birthday that’s near and dear to our hearts… SmartSimple! 2022 is a special year for us at SmartSimple because we officially turn 20!

And while our 20th year milestone is definitely a reason for us to pause and celebrate our past, present and future, we still had a lot to keep us busy this month.

King Pompilus, the second king of Rome, once reduced the number of days in August to 29. It wasn't until Julius Caesar ordered the creation of the Julian calendar that August retained the 31 days we now follow. We're thankful for that, because we needed every extra day in what was a very busy month!
